I just tried to subscribe via my paypal account, but I get the message that I also need a credit card which I don’t have. This is the first time I run into this issue with paypal. Any why to get around this?

Yep, you’ll need a credit card to be able to setup the recurring payments version of a sub.
BUT you can buy subscription Vouchers for 2 month blocks and apply them to your account (as many as you like at once).
