Digital Surround Sound - FIXED

Can’t seem to get Syrinscape to output 5.1 through a digital connection. (Optical to my receiver.)

Worked perfectly on my old PC which had analog outputs, but I’m only getting stereo as far as I can tell. Tests with other software work fine.

Syrinscape is set to 5.1 in the options menu.

Advice/best soundset to test with?

Default output in sound card settings is set to DTS Interactive 5.1. Same results with Dolby Digital Live.
Realtek HD Audio.

Ahhhh… computers, don’t you just love them!

One thing you might try is an old version of Syrinscape (a version you are sure was working) just to make sure we haven’t actually broken surround support ourselves… it’s always possible.

Other than that… ummm… Definitely try different configuaration combinations.

AND google, Surround Output problems Unity Apps (because Unity is what Syrinscape is built in).

Keep us up to date on this thread, especially when you get it working!!!

I have no idea what version worked! Guess I’ll wing it.

Installed (current version) on my other machine (It has analog 5.1 out, unlike my laptop.) Same behavior. Surround works in other things but not Syrinscape. Unless I keep testing with sounds that are not set up for surround… lol.

In fact, no sound is coming out of the rear/center speakers at all, not even music. Same thing with the laptop.

Next step:
Older version. Will report back with findings.

Setup:

Using Jungle (Tropical) for tests moving forward. Been 2 months since I used this soundset, but I recall there being parts that were surround.

Test PC:
5.1 tested and working with other applications/windows.
Analog out to speakers. (3 3.5MM outputs)
Current version of Syrinscape.

Laptop:
5.1 tested and working with other applications/windows.
Digital out to receiver. TOSLINK (optical).
Current version of Syrinscape.

1.2.8.1: No change.
1.2.8: No change.
1.2.7 Older than the version I started with, but same results.

I performed the same tests again, but this time I deleted the APPDATA\locallow folder data rather than just a re-install. Same results. Seems to be other data stored elsewhere though, it’s saving my login and speaker settings.

Happy to do more testing at your direction. First step would probably be finding and removing whatever is saving those settings.

I’m an IT professional, so feel free to get nitty gritty with the details. I’m no stranger to registry edits etc.

All good info. Glad to hear it’s not the version.

Soooo, I’d be googling now about Unity and Surround detection or something?

And I’ll keep thinking!

Have you tried setting Syrinscape to 5.1 and then restarting… or NOT restarting?

NOTE Music should never come out of the rear speakers in Syrinscape (only left and right).

But lots of other sounds should be scattering all over the place.

Various combinations of restarting, file deletions, settings changes have all occurred.

Good to know about the music, honestly didn’t notice that until now. Sitting near the fronts as the DM don’t notice that when the rest of the sounds came from all corners last time LOL.

Can you direct me to what needs to be deleted for a true clean install? Deleting the folder in APPDATA doesn’t clear everything.

Just fyi.

I plugged my laptop into my surround system via HDMI.

Definitely can confirm I’ve got lots of stuff coming out the rear speakers.

AND I even unplugged my front and centre speakers to be sure.

That doesn’t help YOU though!!

Finally got around to hooking my laptop up to my real entertainment system. Was using my old one, (no HDMI) as that’s whats in the game room.

HDMI, PC detects 8 available channels. (I’m using 6 currently)
Syrinscape is only outputting a stereo LPCM signal. The display on my receiver shows LPCM and only L and R speakers active.
Tried switching between it’s outputs (in Syrinscape) with no change.

Although I’ve just discovered that not a single game detects surround sound, which is just odd. Movies do so just fine.

I bet once I solve the games issue, Syrinscape will work. What’s the GPU in yours?

Moron here, reporting from idiot land :joy:

Issue completelyish resolved.

Through my research, I’ve learned that optical does not support LPCM higher than 2.1. So Syrinscape cannot output surround sound over a TOSLINK cable, unless there’s a way to on-the-fly convert that lossless sound data that I do not know about. I’m guessing some higher-end sound cards could do this.

As for the issue over HDMI… well lets just say, different sound devices need to be reconfigured for the number of speakers you have…(AKA I didn’t set Windows to have 5.1 out over HDMI.)

Oh MAN!!! lol

Computers and technolgy = being awesome and saving so much time until… they’re not and DON’T!!!

Here’s :beers:
