A video about how I set up the tech at my game table

So, this video ( LINK to g+) is four things at once:

  • A bit of showing off my impressive technology, and by that I mean “how I put my old hardware to a use other than collecting dust”
  • An impression of how I work around the remaining time without the soundset creator, which is on my “pretty please!” wish list
  • An impression of an alternative to the “Beamer via mirror”-method of putting a virtual tabletop on a table
  • Proof that I, too, can voice any sinister german villain Ben decides to put in his sound sets (sorry, MOELANDER  ).

I hope it’s okay to link this from here.

Why not both of us? The more the merrier.
How many german accents can you speak? The important thing is the “Klangfarbe” not the correct words for that. I can do rheinsch, fränggisch, boarisch, friesisch, vogtländisch.

What exactly is that Touchscreen though? How do you use it? Where does it connect to the Laptop (HDMI? USB?) Please do tell, I’d really like that forsoem games I’m running.

@TheMOELANDER Easy, I was just messing around. Also: a traditional german villain has “ze fake acczent” only a british voice can do.

The touchscreen is a very old model from Medion that was once on sale. If I’m not mistaken it is a Medion Akoya X54000. I have not seen a display like this on sale since then, but I have not been looking for one.

It is connected via HDMI, with a second Connection via USB for the touchscreen data. I don’t get what you mean by “how do you use it”, do you mean for which kind of game or how I use it on actual plays?

Grüße,

I actually meant german dialects. Ich bin manchmal so im Englischen gefangen…

Was ich mit der Benutzung meinte: Nutzt du es nur für Tabletop sachen wie im Video oder auch für anderes?

EDIT: And now I forgot to switch back to english for all the others in this board.

I asked: Are you using it only for Hexmaps like in the vid, or also for something else?

Mainly I use it for the space battles in our Mass Effect setting, where I have no real miniatures and where the display adds to the atmosphere of a CIC. For ground battles, we use conventional maps and miniatures. I also use it to show prepared videos to the players, when it actually is on the table - otherwise I use a Beamer for that. I tried to get the touchscreen to work with my Leap Motion, but the brave little Convertible is not powerful enough for that. EDIT: Oh, and when the Players want to, they can draw schematics for their battleplans on it.

Since it is a bit thick and gets distorted when you viewing angle is not ideal, I plan to craft a special (cheap) table where the display is integrated in the tabletop and just covered by a whiteboard when not needed. But that is WIP.

And: when it was put up like in the vid I noticed how awesome it actually is for file management in multiple folders and for the work in Audacity.
