We’ve been using a basic soundbar at my table for a while, and I’ve been hungering to get something 5.1 to get some sounds behind the players. I’m looking for recommendations (or warnings on what not to get) for systems in the $300-$700 range or thereabouts.

If you can find it, the Logitech Z5500 is regarded as one of the finest 5.1 audio systems available. It’s discontinued, but keep a weather eye on eBay - I got mine complete (minus remote) for $150 shipped. Make sure you have a TOSLINK optical port for best quality, though, and make sure that it has the central ‘pod’ unit.
Thanks for the suggestion! This was actually one I had my eye on already. It looks like Logitech replaced this with the Z906. Is that appreciably worse?
I’m just wondering how much more it’s worth it to pay for a Z5500 rather than just get the Z906.
