Syrinscape Online access in the Evening, EU

Hey folks,

I am encountering bugging issues with Syrinscape for a week now. When we want to start playing in the evening (~8 p.m. in Germany) I encounter:

  • I have a hard time accessing the Syrinscape homepage, takes ages to load

  • It takes a long time until the online player app connects. When it does, I still cannot access the master control page as it just does not load.

  • My players of the ongoing campaign can still connect as minions and I see this in my online player software, but I just cannot access the online page where I can choose different sound sets (Master page?)

Also, out of nowhere my online player program starts as a “maximized version” and I cannot change its size. Hitting ALT+Enter just makes it either fullscreen or back to a “screen filling, moveable version” of the player.

As everything is fine during the day (except for the player being weirdo-maximized), is this a server issue? Do you have too much traffic in the evening because everyone is using Syrinscape (which would make me very happy, but still, I’d love to use it too :smiley: )

@stephan-jegust I have had another report of this, and I did take a look at the time and did some troubleshooting with the user who reported a problem, but did not see anything obviously stressed at our end.

Peak utilisation over the past 24 hours was around 10PM in Germany (GMT+2) and it started to reduce around 6 hours later at 4AM in Germany. Note that this is also the busiest day of the week, and we’re generally seeing increasing demand every week recently.

During that time, yes backend processing time for incoming messages from the online player is elevated, but we’re talking about 95% of requests being satisfied in 20ms up to 15ms, while other metrics (CPU utilisation, load average) remain well within capacity.

I will keep an eye on this, but so far my theory is that there is local congestion (perhaps inside Germany generally, or impacting some ISPs in Germany, or impacting Germany -> US West international traffic) that is causing timeouts and delays.

If it happens again, you could also try switching to your a cellular network (e.g. mobile phone or tablet with 4G connectivity) which I assume would be on a different network than your home connection. If one or the other works better, it may indicate a problem within the ISP network. However be mindful of your cellular data limit if running the online player or master interface over a mobile connection.

That said, we do have detailed monitoring and we will absolutely increase our capacity if necessary.

About the full screen window, that’s a known issue that we intend to fix in our next update (but unfortunately I don’t have an ETA on that). In the meantime, here’s a workaround:

Thank you very much, the fullscreen issue is resolved!! Regarding the Online player, I could actually use my mobile phone to access cellular network, but hands down, how can I then hear the ambient sounds myself when we play using discord on our laptops?

Anyway, great to hear from you and that you replied so quickly. Hope all of you folks in the US and elsewhere are doing fine regarding the current crisis!!

Ich hatte das gleiche Problem am Freitag Nachmittag/Abend. Sobald ich auf das Mobilnetz gewechselt habe, war das Problem weg.

Die Störungshotline ist begrenzt hilfreich, da muss man sehr aufdringlich sein. Es kommen die üblichen Tipps: Router neu starten, Leitung neu starten, Router auf Werkseinstellungen zurücksetzen, etc. Hilft alles nichts. Vor allem wird dann versucht, es auf ein Hardwareproblem des Nutzers abzuwälzen. Man muss explizit erwähnen, dass man das Problem mit allen Endgeräten hat und das Problem nicht existent ist, sobald man sich über ein Mobilfunknetz verbindet. Vier Stunden habe ich in Warteschleifen und mit mehreren Mitarbeitern verbracht (mit ebenso viel unterschiedlichen Kompetenzleveln ;)).

Ich vermute ein DNS Problem. Wenn das Problem wieder auftritt, probier mal, manuell einen anderen DNS-Server in deinem Router zu spezifizieren (wenn du dir das zutraust) - rein testhalber. Ansonsten - die Störungshotline nerven, bis sich jemand kümmert.

@stephan-jegust if data usage on your mobile is not too restricted (e.g. monthly limits), you could setup a personal hotspot on your phone and have your laptop join the hotspot instead of connecting to your home wifi.

But all your players who are also experiencing congestion would need to resolve their own congestion issues as well (although player connections are less sensitive to latency than the GM player and master interface).

Might be best to make a complaint to the ISP and ask them to purchase more backhaul capacity for international traffic. Or look for another ISP that provides some assurances that they maintain enough capacity to avoid congestion at peak times.

Super, vielen herzlichen Dank dir!! Ich glaube, einen DNS-Server zu spezifizieren übersteigt meine Fähigkeiten, zumal hier zu Hause die ganze Familie und Peripherie daran hängt. Wenn in häuslicher Isolation am nächsten Tag die Unterhaltungsmedien streiken, endet das nicht gut :roll_eyes:

Einwählen über ein Mobilfunknetz würde mir wie gesagt insofern nichts bringen, als das ich die Sounds echt gerne selbst hören will. Okay, als Konzessiventscheidung das meine Spieler dann was hören ginge das noch, das ist klar.

Nach etwas Rumtesten - es ist KEIN DNS Server Problem. Ich hab grad schon wieder Zeit in der Warteschlange bei der Telekom verbracht (da Verbindungen zur US Westküste grade wieder seeehr laaaangsaaaaam werden)…

Es gab ein Konfigurationsproblem in der Leitung, dass sollte jetzt behoben sein. Da du auch aus NRW kommst, haben wir wahrscheinlich das Problem, in dem bevölkerungsreichsten Bundesland zu wohnen, es doofes Wetter ist und ALLE im Internet hängen. Da hat sonofconan Recht - es hakt bei der Telekom und nicht genügend Leistungskapazitäten. :frowning:

Schön zu hören einerseits und danke dir, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst, das hier zu schreiben! Andererseits: Mega k*cke, denn im Grunde kann man da jetzt recht wenig machen [zumal, wenn wir abends spielen wollen, setzte ich mich nicht hin und warte ne halbe Stunde auf die Telekom!]

War dass dann ein Konfigurationsproblem DEINER Leitung oder generell bei der Telekom hinsichtlich dieser einen Verbindung mit Syrinscape? :thinking:

Da sind die Auskünfte natürlich etwas schwammig gewesen. Aber da du auch betroffen bist, tippe ich eher auf ein generelles Problem.

Und es ist nicht ein Problem, was Syrinscape allein betrifft. Server in den USA scheinen ein Problem zu bereiten, je weiter westlicher, desto langsamer. Wenn eine Firma keine eigenen Server in Europa bereitstellt, dauert die Verbindung halt. Das “witzige” ist ja - die Verbindung an sich besteht ja (es gibt keinen Timeout im Browser oder sonstwo), die Datenanbindung ist nur unterirdisch. Das ist nervig.

Wir werden heute Abend auch versuchen, eine Runde zu spielen (um 20 Uhr) - ich habe keine große Hoffnung, dass es reibungslos läuft. Danke, Telekom!

Absolut NICHT! Über das Telekomfestnetz war es nicht möglich, sich mit Servern in den USA zu verbinden. Nach Wechsel auf meinen Mobilfunkanbieter und den Einsatz des Handies als Hotspot - kein Problem! Es liegt definitiv an der Telekom, zwei Freunde haben auch das eiche Problem. Ich würde empfehlen, bei der Störungsstelle Druck zu machen. Nur wenn viele Leute auf den Missstand aufmerksam machen, wird evtl. was passieren.

Or find another ISP who users can confirm is working during the same peak time and threaten Telekom that you will move providers (or actually just move providers, since they are giving you bad service!)

It would be difficult to be released from the contract, as they basically provide the service they promise. Exceptions to the rule (like only US based sites) aren’t enough to justify a release. And all in all, they provide good services. My complaint is moved up a step, so we will see, what comes from that.

Anmerkung: Wir hatten jetzt drei Spieleabende in Folge keine Probleme mit Syrinscape Online. Entweder haben wir hier ne fixere Leitung, oder deine Beschwerde hat sich direkt ausgezahlt!

Ich hatte das gleiche Erlebnis. Heute zur Spitzenzeit zwischen 19 und 23 Uhr gespielt und keine Probleme gehabt. Ich bezweifle, dass es an meiner Beschwerde lag, aber vielleicht haben sich ja noch ein paar weitere Leute geäußert und das hat dann was gebracht.
