Yes, if you have vastly more variables, the mentioned solutions is not at all viable, agreed. Nonetheless, it leaves me wondering, that players can act so unpredictable and deviate so much from the path the DM intends to follow, that such heavy jury-rigging is necessary. Well, one never stops to learn.

Well, as you are stating yourself, there’s a near-infinite number of possibilities, so probably the possibility to start two moods simultaneously won’t help.
